Palaj, Gandhinagar: The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) organized a formal welcome session for the interns of its flagship Summer Research Internship Programme (SRIP) 2019 on May 27, 2019. This year, the Institute had received more than 19,000 applications, which was more than double compared to the last year. A total of 144 students from various institutes across the country have been selected, including 41 students from IITGN, 19 students from other IITs and 27 students from NITs. About 44 faculty members of IITGN will guide the participating students on a wide range of research projects during the eight weeks programme.
Prof Pratik Mutha, Dean of Academic Affairs at IITGN encouraged students to make the most of this opportunity with complete sincerity and dedication to the research project as well as by being committed to the all SRIP activities. “SRIP is designed to be a wholesome programme for a wider exposure. The students are not restricted to only one lab or one research project”, he said. He also introduced students to the non-degree program offered by IITGN through which any student from any part of the world can spend a semester at IITGN.
Prof Sudhir K. Jain, Director, IITGN also interacted with the SRIP 2019 interns during the welcoming session. In his interactive talk with the students of research internship Prof Sudhir Jain said, “The best way to spend time during this internship is to see what you can soak. You should try to be a blotting paper or a sponge, to be able to take away learning opportunities and good habits. This will happen with both academic and non-academic experiences. We want you to work on your independent research problem to learn and experience the process of research.” In the end, he also encouraged students to internalise their good experiences from anywhere in the world and be change-makers.
Prof Jain’s address was followed by the first lecture in the SRIP 2019 lecture series by Prof Neeldhara Misra, in which she introduced students to the topic of building trust in people through an interactive demonstration on game theory.
Sharing more information on the SRIP 2019, Prof Manish Kumar, Programme Coordinator and Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering, IITGN said, “The Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) is in its ninth year. We invite students from across the country, who make it to the program following a very competitive selection process. At IIT Gandhinagar, the interns are treated at par with our own students. We try to provide them with a great research experience, and also encourage them to participate in other activities such as sports. Many of them have had a significant impact on their career as a result of participation in this program.”
SRIP 2019 will also include SRIP Lecture Series, Chalk the Talk, a poster competition, and cultural and sports activities for the interns. The programme offers opportunities to students of IITGN as well as students from across the country to carry out research projects under the mentorship of IITGN faculty members.
