Architecture and interior design are two different fields with a lot of overlap. They both involve designing the built environment, but they differ in their focus. Architecture is focused on planning and developing buildings to be functional, safe, durable, and sometimes beautiful. Interior Design focuses primarily on enhancing the function and aesthetics of a space within an existing structure by selecting colors, furniture styles, shapes etc. The question that many students ask themselves when deciding what to study in college is “should I study architecture or interior design?  This blog post discusses the pros and cons of each career choice so you can make your decision easier.

What is the Difference Between Architecture and Interior Design?

Architecture is the profession of designing buildings and their sites, as well as overseeing their construction. Interior design encompasses many aspects including spatial planning, furniture arrangement, color selection, and textiles for a variety of rooms within an interior space in accordance with company guidelines or clients’ specifications. The differences are mainly technical: architecture involves everything that impacts how people live in spaces while interior design focuses on the physical environment. Architecture involves things like engineering issues not found in most other fields such as structural integrity whereas interiors may be more concerned with aesthetic qualities which might please a client’s sensibilities but do little to address problems structurally. Architects have a different level of education than designers because they need to know so much about drafting and mathematics but designers are also involved with other parts of the process like thinking about marketing and how a client’s interests might be met.

Why Study Architecture or Interior Design?

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings, landscapes, and public spaces. It is an in-demand field. Architecture jobs make up two of the top five STEM occupations with about 100k openings expected in 2020 just for architects alone. Interior Design is not a trade. It’s more like a lifestyle brand that encompasses everything from furniture to accessories to textiles. Interior designers have projected growth rates far higher than other professions over the next ten years because people are living smarter and need help making their homes beautiful on every level–not just architecturally but decoratively too (source).

The Benefits of Studying Architecture or Interior Design

Architecture and interior design are both creative but they are also very different. Architecture is focused on the outside of buildings while interior designers focus more on style and design inside a building. The field of architecture has been shrinking in recent years because not as many people need architects to build their homes or offices (whereas there’s always a demand from those who want an architect-designed home). However, if you do choose architecture it’ll be worth your time to explore some architectural styles including postmodernism which typically includes using bold colors and shapes that make something look newer than its age. Interior designers have less risk of losing jobs due to changing markets since homeowners will often hire them after buying new furniture or redecorating their homes, but it can be less satisfying for some.

How to Decide if You Should Study Architecture or Interior Design

If you are looking to work in the architecture and design field, you may be wondering if there is a clear distinction. In many cases, it is not straightforward whether an individual should study architectural or interior design because both are related fields. The following article will help answer some of your questions about deciding between studying architecture versus interior design: Are they different? Architecture is more focused on buildings while interior design encompasses all aspects of designing rooms within those buildings – from furniture and appliances to color schemes and wall coverings. Moreover, architects also have knowledge of engineering principles so as to ensure that structures can withstand loads on them such as high winds or heavy snowfall whereas designers focus more specifically on aesthetics. If we take this into consideration then we see that interior designers are more focused on the appearance of space while architects focus more on how it should function.

Career Opportunities in Both Fields

Architecture is a complex and challenging field that demands many years of study, but with high pay-offs. Architects are needed to design buildings as well as other structures such as bridges or tunnels, and they also work on the surrounding landscape features like paths for pedestrians. They may specialize in residential architecture. Working within the parameters of local building codes when designing homes, apartments, and condominiums to ensure compliance with zoning regulations. In contrast, architects do not have much say over what goes into interior decorating – it is up to homeowners whether they want an open space living room or separate areas for seating, etc. But understanding how light falls in particular spaces can help designers create more attractive interiors by arranging natural light sources where possible instead of relying on artificial lights. Architecture is more intellectually challenging than interior design, with a strong focus on math and science in order to understand building materials like concrete or wood for example, and how they are assembled together structurally. Architects learn about the structural properties of various materials, which ones can stand up to high winds or earthquakes, while others may not be able to support large amounts of weight without buckling under pressure.

In conclusion, architecture and interior design are very different fields. Architecture is for more of a technical thinker whereas interior design has less science in it and relies on the creativity of its designer. Interior designers need to be able to come up with solutions and use their knowledge to do so while architects can often rely on experience to solve problems that arise. The most important thing you should consider when deciding which career path will suit you best is what your strengths are-what subjects did you enjoy studying as they were interesting or challenging? If math was difficult but art was fun then maybe an architectural education would not be right for you but if you enjoyed geometry class then perhaps this could be the perfect field for you.
