Mumbai , 19 August 2020: IIT Bombay will celebrate 58th convocation in a very innovative way. The convocation will be held on 23 August 2020 from 1:30 pm onwards in a virtual reality mode keeping in view the safety measures during the ongoing pandemic.
Virtual Reality experience: Students can view their own animated personalised avatar receiving medals, awards, and degrees from the Chief Guest and the Director. They will view this on their mobile or desktop synchronised with the live telecast.
Prof. Duncan Haldane, co-recipient of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics, and a Professor of Physics at Princeton University will be the Chief Guest during the ceremony. Mr. Stephen A. Schwarzman, Chairman, CEO & Co-Founder of Blackstone, world-renowned investor and philanthropist will be the Guest of Honour.
The entire event will be broadcast live on DD Sahyadri channel so students, relatives, and friends, even in remote areas without internet access, can watch on a large screen with family. The event will also be live streamed on the Institute’s official Youtube Channel and social media pages.

Dr Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay, said “We thought it best to arrange such a VR-convocation for the graduating students as we did not wish to put our students’ health at risk, but at the same time, we did not wish to deprive them and their families of the sense of achievement and pride of passing out of India’s premier engineering Institute.”
