New Delhi, 12 December 2020: Year 2021 is expected to be the most happening year. In a bid to bring structural reforms in higher education system, the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), the single higher education regulatory body, will become operational from the next academic session. Hence, Union Government will merge all the higher education regulators including the University Grants Commission (UGC) and All Indian Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to create a single education commission in 2021.

Higher education secretary Amit Khare informed this while addressing FICCI’s 93rd Annual General Convention on 11 December 2020. Mr Amit Khare also informed that the government will introduce a single entrance test for admission into all central universities.

Mr Amit Khare, Secretary, Department of Higher Education said, “The single higher education regulatory body, the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) will become operational from the next academic session.”

He added that currently, the benchmarking is different for different universities for infrastructure and other things. “In the National Education Policy 2020, benchmarking will be done based on the same academic and research standards not based on governance. All the universities including the central private state will be benchmarked with the same criteria,” added Mr Khare.

A common admission test for all Central Universities in India is on the card. From next academic year, single entrance test will be implemented, Union Education Secretary added.  Currently, there are more than 50 Central Universities in India.
