New Delhi, 20 October 2020:  The Universities of Grants Commission (UGC), regulator of the Higher Education, has asked all universities to initiate action for governance reforms in the light of National Education Policy 2020.

In a letter to All Universities, the UGC mentioned that the Ministry of Education is in the process of finalizing the plan for the implementation of NEP 2020. The implementation of the policy is to be led by various bodies including universities.

Earlier, the UGC has asked the higher education institutions across the country to submit their feedback and suggestions regarding the implementation of the new National Education Policy 2020. Institutions can submit their suggestions and feedback on NEP 2020 the MyGov portal.

The New Education Policy, after 34 years, has proposed many critical changes in structure of various degree programmes.

From flexible 4-year UG program to NTA to conduct common university admission, are many changes proposed by NEP 2020.  Universities will have the flexibility to offer different designs of Master’s programmes: (a) there may be a 2-year programme with the second year devoted entirely to research for those who have completed the 3-year Bachelor’s programme; (b) for students completing a 4-year Bachelor ’s programme with Research, there could be a 1-year Master’s programme.

Under Graduate Programmes can be of 3 or 4 years: Bachelor’s Degree after 3 years and Bachelor’s with Research after 4 years.

There may be an integrated 5-year Bachelor’s/Master’s programme.
