New Delhi:  Students will earn their degrees by collecting 30-35%  of their course credits in universities or institutes other than their parent university and in subjects radically different than their core subjects. This is possible once the University Grants Commission (UGC) approves National Academic Credit Bank. Now the Indian Education floats a concept paper on National Academic Credit Bank (NAC-BANK).

The main objective of NAC-BANK would be facilitating student mobility across universities and colleges wherein credits can be accumulated and be used at alter point of time for the requirements of partial fulfillment of a degree program.  The concept note is uploaded on the official website of the UGC.

The academic credits earned by a student in the system can be automatically credited to his/her account and after accumulation of credits to certain (levels) a student can accrue and redeem the credits for any academic program at any convenient time.  Here, academic program is an educational program leading to the award of a degree, diploma or certificate.

The proposed  NAC-BANK will allow students to join in one university, pursue the course in another university and earn a degree from a different university. This step will help the student be provided with a lot more flexibility.

It works on the principle of multiple entry-multiple exit (MEME) as well as ant time learning, any where learning, and any level learning.

National Academic Credit-BANK will facilitate credit points but will not award any degree.

The UGC has requested all stakeholders including, student community, teacher community, educational institutes and others can provide their comments on the Concept Paper on the National Academic Credit-BANK at the mail id : [email protected] .
