New Delhi:  There are more than 900 universities in India.  Universities, Colleges and other higher educational institutes offer lucrative career opportunities. For teaching level posts, the entry level posts in higher educational institutes is Assistant Professor.

For recruitment of faculty posts in Universities and colleges, the entire process governed by  the UGC Regulations On Minimum Qualifications For Appointment Of Teachers And Other Academic Staff In Universities And Colleges And Other Measures For The Maintenance Of Standards In Higher Education, 2018. This regulation is popularly known as UGC Faculty Recruitment Regulations.

Here, Skilloutlook presents key points of the regulation with respect to Assistant Professor posts.  Decoding both Eligibility and Screening criteria, aspirants will be able to access where they stand in the faculty recruitment process.

Eligibility Conditions for Assistant Professor (For the Disciplines of Arts, Commerce, Humanities, Education, Law, Social Sciences, Sciences, Languages, Library Science, Physical Education, and Journalism & Mass Communication.):

Eligibility (A or B) :

 

A.

i) Master‘s Degree with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) in the relevant subject or an equivalent degree from an Indian/foreign University.

ii) Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, the candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC or the CSIR or a similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET or who are or have been awarded a PhD Degree in accordance with the UGC MPhil/PhD Degree Regulations, 2009, or 2016, and their amendments from time to time as the case may be.

Hence, PhD degree holders are exempted from NET or SET criteria for Assistant Professor posts.

NET/SLET/SET shall also not be required for such Masters Programmes in disciplines for which NET/SLET/SET is not conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC, like SLET/SET.

                                                                        OR

The PhD degree has been obtained from a foreign university/institution with a ranking among top 500 in the World University Ranking (at any time) by any one of the following: (i) Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) (ii) the Times Higher Education (THE) or (iii) the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai).

Academic Score: Once, the universities notifies for vacant faculty posts, eligible candidates start applying the jobs. Then the university starts the screening process for short listing candidates for conducting interview.  Here, Academic  Score plays a key role for screening of candidates for Interview.

Academic Score as specified in Appendix II (Table 3A) for Universities, and Appendix II (Table 3B) for Colleges, shall be considered for short-listing of the candidates for interview only.

 The selections shall be based only on the performance in the interview.  The Number of candidates to be called for interview shall be decided by the concerned universities and colleges.

Broadly the Selection criteria divided three parts for Universities:

Academic Score – 80 (For Graduation, PG and MPhil & PhD)

Research Publications – 10

Teaching Experience – 10

Total – 100

Criteria for Short-listing of Candidates for Interview for the Post of Assistant Professors in Universities:

However, if the period of teaching/Post-doctoral experience is less than one year then the marks shall be reduced proportionately.

Note:

(A) (i) M.Phil + Ph.D Maximum – 30 Marks

(ii) JRF/NET/SET Maximum – 07 Marks

(iii) In awards category Maximum – 03 Marks

(B) Number of candidates to be called for interview shall be decided by the concerned universities.
