New Delhi, 23 July 2023: The University Grants Commission (UGC) , the Higher Education Regulator, has announced that the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET) and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) shall be the will be the minimum criteria for the direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor for all higher education institutions including Universities and Colleges.

The notification mentioned that PhD qualification for appointment as an #AssistantProfessor would be optional from 1 July 2023. NET/SET/SLET shall be minimum criteria for direct recruitment to post of Assistant Professor for all Higher Education Institutions.
As per UGC, These regulations may now be called the ‘University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) (2nd Amendment) Regulations, 2023.’
