New Delhi, 30 Sept 2020: The University Grants Commission (UGC), the regulator for higher education in India, on 29 September 2020 released a new guidance document related to academic research in India, titled Good Academic Research Practices (GARP). GARP is a comprehensive documents that highlights the integrity parameters in academic research for checking plagiarism and maintaining research ethics. The UGC has published GARP in partnership with Clarivate’s Web of Science and has indexed more than 34,000 journals. While e-releasing the document  Dr. Bhushan Patwardhan, vice-chairman of the UGC said  there is a need for a document outlining good academic research practices with focus on potential threats and promoting best practices in research

The document addresses key concern areas in academic research such as plagiarism, misrepresentation and fabrication. The document guides the researchers about planning and designing their research subject and executing the work through proper documentation and protected data storage.

“This document should be a compulsory reading for the PhD candidates before they start on the PhD program. At least one credit course should be introduced in the very first year of the program so that the students understand what is right and what isn’t,” said Prof. Rakesh Bhatnagar Vice-Chancellor Banaras Hindu University, who chaired the committee putting together the document, during the e-launch.

This document will help create a strong foundation for research culture and integrity.

The UGC has not uploaded the Full Document of GARP on its official website till the story was updated. Once, SkillOutlook accesses the GARP Copy, we will publish an updated story on the Guideline.
