Mumbai: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is conducting Joint Entrance Examination Main 2017 (JEE Main) on 02 April 2017 (Sunday). The online application process has already commenced from 01 December 2016 onwards. The last date for application is 02 January 2017 while fee can be paid up to 03 January 2017.
JEE Main 2017 is conducted for admission into undergraduate engineering programmes (BTech) in National Institutes of technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), etc. The JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs/ISM Dhanbad. Here, SkillOutlook presents 10 key facts and features of JEE Main 2017.
One. 31 NITs, 20 IIITs, 19 CFTIs tentatively will participate in the admission process: As per the information bulletin of JEE Main 2017, the score and rank of Paper-I of JEE (Main) – 2017 for all candidates will be declared by 27 April 2017. The rank shall comprise All India rank and All India category rank. Only the All India Rank (AIR) is used for admissions through Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) to NITs/IIITs/CFTIs/SFIs/Others, while other ranks are for information purposes. There are 31 NITs that will participate in centralized seat allocation process based on JEE Main 2017 results. Similarly, 20 IIITs( also IIITM and IIITDM) and 19 other CFTIs and state government institutes will participate in the admission process.
2.An eligibility test for JEE Advanced 2017 Test: The JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs/ISM Dhanbad. As per JEE Advanced 2017 notification, only 2.20 lakh (two lakh twenty thousand) candidates based on results of JEE Main 2017 will be short listed and eligible for appearing JEE Advanced 2017. Hence, 20,000 more candidates compared to last year will be qualified for appearing JEE Advanced 2017.
3.State government in JEE Main system: States of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Nagaland, Odisha and some other institutions have joined JEE (Main) system. However, their admission criteria will be notified by the concerned authorities. Therefore, the candidates seeking admission to the technical institutions for BTech courses in these states, which were earlier admitting based on their State level examination, are also advised to fill in the JEE (Main) 2017 application form online. Punjab Technical University, Chandigarh, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Indian Institute of Space Technology, Thiruvanathapuram, Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology (under Delhi University) and others will have their own seat allocation process.
4.Indian Navy and other universities may use Rank of JEE Main 2017 for admission: Indian Navy has already notified that from Jan 2018 Course, for which advertisement will be released in May/June 2017, the short listing of candidates for SSB Interview for 10+2 B tech Entry scheme will be based on JEE Main rank and not the PCM marks.
Also, AISECT University, Bhopal, Amity School of Engineering, Amity University, DR KN Modi University, Tonk (Rajasthan), Techno India University, Kolkata, and others participated in the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) through JEE Main 2016.
5.No of applications trend: The pan India entrance test is expected to see more than 12 lakh applications. In JEE Main 2016, nearly 12 lakh candidates had appeared, while out of those 1,98,000 students were declared eligible for appearing the JEE advanced examination 2016.
6.Number seats in IITs: Out of registered 155,948 candidates in JEE Advanced 2016, only 36,566 were qualified as rank holders of JEE Advanced 2016. Total number of seats for all the 23 IITs (including Indian School of Mining (ISM), Dhanbad) was 10,575 for the academic year 2016-17 (B-Tech courses). The IIT council has already recommended and proposed to hike the total seats of IITs for all courses by 20% to one lakh seat strength by 2020. If the central government approves the proposal of IIT Council, then a fraction of seat hike may be implemented from the coming academic year. The total number of seats in all IITs for BTech course may be increased by 5-10% for the coming academic year (2017-2018). The higher intake capacity will facilitate more candidates to get admitted into IITs.
7.No weightage for 12th exam in Ranking: There shall be no weightage for the 12th class marks in calculating the ranks in the JEE (Main) examination. For the candidates to appear the test, they should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST students the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.
8. Aadhaar is mandatory for applying the exam: The candidates will have to enter their AADHAAR number, name, date of birth & gender while these information will be validated with the UIDAI’s data. Students from Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) are exempted from having to enter their Aadhaar details while applying for the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) 2017. Aadhaar card will be mandatory for candidates from other states – except these- while applying JEE Main 2017. Hence, candidates those don’t have Aadhaar Card should will have to register for their Aadhaar Card as soon as possible.
9. Facilitation centres for Aadhaar Card by CBSE: In order to facilitiate such applicants who are not having Aadhaar, the CBSE has specially set up facilitation centres in each city of examination for the purpose of Aadhaar enrolment. The applicants can approach such facilitation centres who will not charge any amount from any applicant for Aadhaar enrolment. In the official notification, the CBSE said that the candidates should ensure that their AADHAAR card has correct details of their name, date of birth & gender as per school records. If there is some mismatch in these details, the candidates should immediately get it corrected in AADHAAR data or school records, as the case may be.
10.Number of Attempts: The number of attempts which a candidate can avail at JEE (Main) shall be limited to 03 (three). This is applicable for admission to IITs/NITs/IIITs/CFTIs.
