Chennai: In a major departure from normal admission procedure, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, has switched to rolling admission mode for its PhD and MS research degree programmes. Hence, admission to the Research Programme for PhD and MS is open throughout the academic year from July 2017 to June 2018.
IIT Madras has invited applications from eligible candidates for admission to PhD and MSs (by Research) programmes under regular / part-time / external schemes. Half-time Teaching Research Assistantship (HTRA) funded by MHRD as well as fellowships from other funding agencies like CSIR, UGC, DST, ICMR, ICAR, AICTE etc. are available for those who have qualified for these schemes.
The research admission notification of IIT Madras mentioned that  access to the link IITM PhD/MS Application will be available from 01 March 2017. Applications received till 02 April 2017 will be considered for July 2017 admission session.
The various department of IIT Madras which are offering PhD and MS programmes are given below: Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Bio Technology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Design, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management Studies, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Material Engineering, Ocean Engineering, and Physics.
Admission Procedure: Under the rolling over admission procedure, shortlisted candidates will be called for interview and/or test by the Selection Committees of the respective departments from time to time.
Financial Assistance (Half-time Teaching Research Assistantship): For PhD/Direct PhD/Upgraded to PhD, monthly financial amount of Rs25,000/ pm for first two years and Rs28,000/ pm for subsequent 3 years will be provided. For MS candidates, fellowship amount of Rs12,400/ pm will be provided for the period of eligibility.
Candidates with BE/BTech can apply to pursue Direct PhD (MS+Ph.D.) in Engineering/Sciences after their Bachelor’s Degree. Meritorious MS scholars with CGPA>8.0 are eligible to upgrade to the PhD programme in the same department and will receive two degrees (M.S.+Ph.D) on completion of the programme. MS scholars receiving HTRA are eligible for enhanced fellowship after upgradation.
Opportunities to carry out Joint PhD between IITM and reputed Foreign Universities are also available.
