Indian Institute of Technology Jammu inaugurated by HRD Minister

Jammu: Union Minister for Human Resource Development Mr Prakash Javadekar inaugurated the Indian Institute of Technology Jammu today (6 August 2016). The institution is the first IIT for Jammu & Kashmir state and is set up to create a learning environment. IIT Jammu will be built over 500 Acres of land near Jammu city.

Jammu is among the six cities across the country which were set to get new IITs. Meanwhile, in the first year, the institute will function from a well-equipped temporary campus in Paloura, Jammu that will have all the facilities to meet the standards.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State with PMO and Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension, Mr Jugal Kishore, Member Parliament, Mr Shamsher Singh Manhas, Member Parliament, Dr. Nirmal Kumar Singh, Dy. Chief Minister, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, Mrs Priya Sethi, MoS for Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir and other dignitaries were present during the ceremony which was held at KCS College of Education, Paloura.

On the occasion, Mr Javadekar expressed his delight to inaugurate the campus in the city of temples bestowed with rich culture and heritage. The institution will go a long way in building and harnessing the immense talent of the entire state, he added.

The institution will offer a set of programmes across various academic streams that will follow a credit system and the performance in a course will be continuously evaluated.

It can be noted that on 25 July 2016 the Lok Sabha passed IIT Amendment Bill 2016 for incorporation of six new IITs, including the one in Goa. The other new IITs are at Tirupati ( Andhra Pradesh ), Palakkad (Kerala), Dharwar (Karnataka), Bhilai ( Chhattisgarh ), Goa  and conversion of Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT under the Act.
