Chennai: Layam, a unique staffing company operating in a different business model, leverages the skill sets of candidates with poor academic record and creates a successful career path for them. Now Layam has reached yet another milestone by successfully placing 4,000 candidates in manufacturing and automobile companies across India through their Layam Manning Operating Model (LMOM).

The uniqueness of this training scheme lies in the fact that all the candidates who have carved a niche for themselves today were once college drop-outs or diploma holders with poor academic records.  The LMOM is a temporary job contract conceptualized to equip the candidates with a particular skill by placing them in a well-established company wherein they get on the job training in any of the areas of operation which may range from facility management, quality, testing, supply chain management, sub assembly, technical admin, vendor management, accounts, etc.

Layam, based in Chennai, is probably the only company in India to have handpicked such candidates, recognized their inherent skill sets and created a successful career path for them. True to the company’s mission of empowering people and becoming a catalyst for growth, Layam plans to help more aspiring candidates based on the growth of the business in the forthcoming year. This is also in line with the Government policy of Skill India.

Commenting on this pioneering philosophy, Mr. G.S. Ramesh, Chairman, Layam Group, said, “Our success in the recruitment and staffing industry can largely be attributed to the fact that we never believe in resting on our laurels. Our mission is to stay ahead of competition by innovating newer lines of service offerings based on the changing needs of clients, market trends and technological advancement. This belief has not only helped our growth trajectory but has immensely benefitted our candidates and stakeholders alike.”

Layam embarked on this journey of ‘indirect skilling’ in the year 2009 because of an ad hoc research conducted on the recruitment and staffing processes of automotive and manufacturing companies. The research findings revealed that diploma holders with over 70% of aggregate marks were considered eligible for jobs after screening them on 4 parameters namely family background, academic records, attitude and personality.

Layam does not charge any fee from the candidates for this entire process but then again they make sure that the company offers them a salary structure with benefits like PF, ESI, Uniforms etc.

Speaking about his experience with Layam, Mr Ragupathi S, who works now in TVS and had started his career under Layam Payroll said, “I had begun to consider myself as a failure until the day Layam hired me and sent me to a manufacturing company as a trainee. Despite a poor academic record, the company not only trained me but recognized and honed my skill sets. After 2 years, I emerged as a whole new person equipped with a sound technical knowledge and lots of self-confidence. “
