Guwahati (UT): In the third lecture of the AdtU Chancellor’s Lecture Series held on March 13, 2021, Prof. Dr. Dhiraj Bora, Vice Chancellor of Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU), delivered a lecture on the topic “Fusion: The Path to Harness Clean Energy”.

Prof. Bora was introduced in the event by Prof. Dr. Sunandan Baruah, Dean of Engineering & Technology and Research of AdtU, wherein Prof. Baruah highlighted the achievements of Prof. Bora. It may be mentioned here that Prof. Bora had earlier also headed the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar and was also the Chief Scientist of ITER- India. Prof. Bora also held the position of Deputy Director General and Director for Directorate for Controls, Heating and Diagnostics at ITER International Organization at Cadarache, France; he is also playing an instrumental role in ITER, an international nuclear fusion research and engineering megaproject, which will be the world’s largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment.

In his lecture, Prof. Bora introduced the audience to nuclear fusion which, as he said, will be the source of energy in the near future while mentioning about the Nuclear Reactor being set up next to the Cadarache facility in Saint-Paul-lès-Durance, in Provence, southern France. Many countries have joined hands in this mega project where India is playing a key role.

This reactor, once commissioned, will be able to deliver 500 MW of energy with an energy input of just 50 MW.

An interactive session was conducted after the lecture.

The lecture was attended, amongst others, by the Vice Chancellor of AdtU Prof.Dr. NC Talukdar and Dean of Studies Prof. Dr. Bandana Dutta.
