New Delhi: Institutes of National Importance (INI) are premier educational institutes in India. Institutes of National Importance receive special recognition and funding from the Government of India. INI status is conferred on a premier public higher education institution in India by an act of Parliament of India.
These institutions “serves as a pivotal player in developing highly skilled personnel within the specified region of the country/state”. As per All Indian Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2019-20, there are 127 institutes enjoy the tag of Institute of National Importance or INI.
These INIs include 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT); 20 Indian Institutes of Management (IIM); 30 National Institutes of Technology (NIT); 17 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT); and 7 Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), etc.
