New Delhi: India is one of largest education systems in the world. The total number of universities in India touched 950, as per the University Grants Commission (UGC), which approves universities and regulates varsities.
Among total universities, private universities category is one of fastest growing segment. Out of 950 approved universities, 361 are managed private education groups. Meanwhile, 412 universities are funded and controlled by either state or central governments.
The number of Central Universities, which are controlled by Special Act of the Union Government of India, are increased to 53 from 50. The National Sanskrit University, Tirupati, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Delhi and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya National Sanskrit University, New Delhi have been updated to to Central Universities from Deemed to be Universities.

Rajasthan has highest number of Universities with 85. Uttar Pradesh has a total number of 74 Universities. Tamil Nadu has 52 varsities while Andhra Pradesh has 35 universities.
State Universities mean public universities controlled central government or state government. Central universities or union universities in India are established by an Act of Parliament, which have autonomy power.
