New Delhi:  The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released the list of fake universities which are operating in India without approval from appropriate authorities. From time to time, the UGC publicises this fake universities list for the interest of public so that students and parents will not fall into any trap of these illegal universities. The UGC has taken punitive actions against these fake higher education institutes and are blacklisted.

Out of 22 fake universities in the list, nine are from Uttar Pradesh and five are from Delhi while two each from Odisha and West Bengal. The list has one fake university each in the states given below: Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. The UGC has alerted that these fake universities (list is given below) are not entitled to confer any degrees.

The UGC said that the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 under section 22(L) provides that only a University established by a central, State/provincial Act or an institution deemed to be university under section 3 or an institution especially empowered by an Act of parliament to confer UGC specified degrees under section 22(3) of the Act.

Further, Section 23 of the UGC Act prohibits the use of word “University” by any institution other than a university established as stated above. Therefore, students and public at large are hereby informed that such 22 self-styled, unrecognized institutions functioning in contravention of the UGC Act have been declared as fake and not entitled to confer any degrees.
