GATE 2017 score card will be valid for next three years from the results day. Broadly, the use of GATE score card can be broadly divided three parts: Higher education at IITs, IISc, NITs, CFTIs; employment opportunities at leading PSUs for Graduate Engineers; and Financial Assistance/Fellowships supported by Ministry of HRD and other government agencies.

Higher Education (MTech & PhD): GATE has emerged as one of the bench mark tests for engineering and science aptitude in facilitating admissions for higher education (MTech/PhD) in IITs, IISc and various other Institutes (NITs,CFTIs) / Universities/ Laboratories in India.  IITs, IISc, and NITs announce GATE Cuts Offs for various disciplines for admission to MTech and PhD programmes.  Most of the IITs have already announced MTech and PhD Admissions for the next session of 2017-18. Candidates need to follow these admission notifications.

Employment Opportunities as Graduate Engineers:  Over the last few years, GATE score is also being used as one of the criteria for recruitment in Government Organizations such as Cabinet Secretariat, and National/State Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in India. Nearly,  50 both state and central PSUs have already notified their recruitment plans via GATE score card. Hence, candidates those want to get job at PSUs as an engineering role  should follow their Job Advertisement.

Financial Assistance/Fellowships: GATE score is essential for obtaining financial assistance/fellowships during Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture, and Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Science in Institutes supported by the MHRD or other Government agencies. Qualification in GATE is also a minimum requirement to apply for various fellowships awarded by many Government organizations. To avail of financial assistance (scholarship), the candidate must first secure admission to a program in these Institutes, by a procedure that could vary from institute to institute.

GATE 2017 was conducted for all the 23 papers (disciplines) by an online Computer Based Test (CBT).
